Decision support systems for forest management have been steadily evolving since about 1980 in response to growing demand from forest managers for sophisticated analytical systems that can address the complexities of contemporary forest management issues such as adaptive management in the context of concerns for managing for forest ecosystem sustainability, integrity, and resilience while ensuring the provision of ecosystem services.
The severity of forest fires has increased substantially worldwide. This severity is prone to increase as a consequence of global change, e.g. climate and socioeconomic change. This suggests the need for the development of a coherent wildfire risk management strategy. This poses a challenge to forest researchers and managers as this strategy calls for methods and tools to help integrate forest and fire management planning activities that are often carried out independently of each other.
The provision of multiple functions of forests is becoming an increasingly important part of forest management. Traditional forest management is mostly timber-oriented. Forests, however, provide a broad range of ecosystem services that are critically important for society. Therefore, sustainable forest management is expected to reflect public demands with often contradictory interests which put a pressure on forests. Modern sustainable forest management has to consider more than one management objective and includes many stakeholders.
Forests and forestry activities provide an opportunity to address the pressing challenge of climate change through sustainable production. Forests also play a strategic role in mitigating critical issues, including biodiversity conservation, water regulation, energy efficiency, pollution reduction and mitigation, production of raw biological materials, food safety, and human and ecosystem health and poverty.
The Organizing Committee of the ICDSST 2021 invites researchers, developers and specialists in the related areas of decision making, including its methodologies and technologies, as well as application oriented practitioners directed to the implementation of solutions for DSS challenges to submit their work to the ICDSST 2021.
EURO (the Association of European Operational Research Societies) and its Working Group on Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) invites you to participate in the ICDSST 2020 6th International Conference on Decision Support System Technology on “Cognitive Decision Support Systems and Technologies” in the city of Zaragoza, Spain. The Conference will be hosted at the University of Zaragoza, during the period of May 27th to May 29th, 2020.
A Special Issue entitled "Land Change Modelling" will be issued in Land (ISSN 2073-445X). There is a special interest in manuscripts describing new approaches to land change modelling as well as large-scale applications.
