Forest Research Decision Support Systems

Conifer Timber Quality Model A Sitka Spruce timber quality model for researchers. Due to be expanded to cover Scots Pine in 2009/2010 as well as further timber properties.

Ecological Site Classification A system to match tree species to site climate and soil conditions. Includes tools to estimate soil quality from indicator plants. The stand tool is available as a web based system but spatial versions have also been implemented for in house use.

Establishment Management Information System An extension to ESC GB to look at conifer species suitability in the context of wind hazard, timber quality and the impact of practices such as time of planting, CCF, fertiliser, cultivation and rotation length.

Forest Gales/Stormrisk Stand based tool for assessing risk of windthrow in conifer stands. Exists as a GB tool with digital wind map and an internationalised version that requires a user to determine site wind variables (weibull A and K).

Forest Maps A variety of tools based on ESC demonstrating the potential application of Google Maps and similar technologies to web delivered DSS. A full list of tools is available by logging into the FR DSS portal, but some examples are

Sitka Spruce in Future Climates

Herbicide Advisor A simple system that indicates the effectiveness of available herbicides against weeds and their impact on any tree species that might also be present on site.

Hylobius Management Support System This system is used in British and Irish forestry to help reduce the impact of Hylobius attacks on restocked spruce and pine sites. A key driver is chemical reduction through optimal timing of insecticide treatments or adjustment of planting dates to avoid peaks of insect populations.

Forest Research Decision Support Systems Portal A web based interface to Forest Research stand based decision support systems. It can be accessed from Forest Research Decision Support, note registration is required.
